Western Digital My Passport Elite 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBAAC3200ACH-NESN (Charcoal)

Review

Western Digital My Passport Elite 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBAAC5000ACH-NESN (Charcoal)

This little monstrosity is perfect……just a little larger than my iPhone, and it has 500 GB of storage space! Crazy how these things keep getting smaller and smaller. The outside looks very sleek, and it fits without any problem into my laptop bag. I plan on using the Passport to store lots and LOTS of videos. Basically, the greatest part about the WD Passport Elite, is the fact that it is very small, yet so large inside.

The only hiccup I encountered was during the initial set up on my mac. Apparently, the device had not been formatted for a mac prior to shipping, so when I tried to install the included software, it wouldn’t let me. The included instructions do not provide the user with the information we need to fix this, so if you’re not a mac wiz in this area, you’ll need to either get on the internet and research what others have done, or you’ll need to call the Technical Support number on the box to get step by step instructions on how to resolve it on your mac. Not sure if this was an isolated incident or not, but it did happen to me.

Otherwise, the product is great once you get it installed.

Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition 1TB USB 2.0 (WDH2U10000N)

Review

Many of these mirrored drives on the market only offer a Raid 0 configuration which doesn’t really do what you want it to. With Raid 0 you aren’t able to save your data if one of the two drives crashes which is why most people buy these drives. This drives offers Raid 0 but it also offers a Raid 1 configuration which makes a copy of the data on both drives. This enables you to just replace one of the drives in the box if one fails and you don’t lose any of your information.

Feature

  • The safest place for your data

More about RAID

RAID is a high-tech acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. The acronym is not important. What is important is that the inclusion of RAID technology in WD’s dual-drive external storage systems make them very powerful storage products.

With RAID enabled on a storage system you can connect two or more drives in the system so that they act like one big fast drive or set them up so that one drive in the system is used to automatically and instantaneously duplicate (or mirror) your data for real-time backup.

There are two reasons you might want a RAID system of drives.

1. You need tons of storage space and you need it to be fast. (RAID 0)
2. You want to instantaneously and automatically backup your data. (RAID 1)

Which RAID mode should I use?

RAID Mode Comparison

1. Speed (RAID 0)

Set in high-performance mode (also called striped mode or RAID 0) the storage system gives you the power you need when you’re:

  • Designing huge graphics and you need a lightning-fast Photoshop scratch space.
  • Recording large DV files while maintaining clean audio performance.
  • Editing DV or HD video and you want a smooth work flow with no dropped frames.
  • Rendering complex 3D objects or special effects.
  • Performing disk-intensive database operations.
  • Driven to be the first geek on your block with a computer so fast it blows your socks off.

Why is RAID 0 so fast?

It’s a bit complicated, but suffice it to say that two heads, or in this case, drives, are better than one. Picture two hoses filling a bucket at the same time or two men bailing a boat and you can understand why two drives striped are faster than one. Data is saved (striped) across both drives and accessed in parallel by both drives so you get higher data transfer rates on large data accesses and higher input/output rates on small data accesses.

2. Data protection (RAID 1)

Set the system to data protection mode (also know as mirrored mode or RAID 1) and the data is duplicated onto one of the drives providing two copies of all the data. This reduces your capacity to the size of a single disk.

So why do I want that kind of redundancy?
It’s your data, your family pictures, your movie of baby’s first steps, your first novel. Is it important? You decide. If it is, then RAID mirroring if for you.

Western Digital WDMEB5000TN My Passport Essential 500GB USB Hard Drive – Blue

Review

This is the second WD passport I’ve owned, and I’m happy with each one. I use the 320 GB to back up my laptop with the Apple “Time Machine” application, and it works perfectly! My only complaint is that the program on the drives isn’t all that great – I’ve just wiped both of them off and use the drive as a blank space. Also, the “Western Digital for Mac” doesn’t come in interesting colors like the regular passports, so I reformatted this one to work with my Mac (if you want to use the program on the hard drive with your Mac, don’t buy this one). Color-wise, it matches my MacBook Pro perfectly!!

Feature

  • Box Contents – My Passport Essential 500GB Portable USB Hard Drive, USB 2.0 cable, Quick Install guide
  • 500GB Hard Drive Capacity
  • Just plug it in and it’s ready to use. There is no CD to install; the included software loads from the drive the first time you plug it in
  • Powered by the USB bus. No separate power supply is needed
  • This ultra-portable drive fits easily in your pocket or purse, weighs only a few ounces, and holds tons of valuable data

Western Digital WD Elements 400 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDE1U4000N (Silver)

Review

My first 400gb elements I bought on Amazon has an on/off switch, which I like very much. About two months later, I bought another one from Amazon. It DOES NOT have an on/off switch. However, when my laptop is turned off, the drive shuts down too, and boots up when the laptop boots up. And the first one only shuts down via the switch. They both work extremely well. I have downloaded 350GB of MP3 music onto one of these drives all in one session. I have some case fans which I rigged up for 110v a.c. I use them when I have a lot of files to load or transfer to different drives. I put one fan in front of these drives and one behind them, as I have had the drives running full time for up to 20 hours at a time. The drives are stacked one on top of the other. They stay very cool with these fans. I have had absolutely no problems of any kind with these drives. They don’t freeze up, slow down after reaching max heat levels, shut down mysteriously, and even without the use of the fans, they don’t get excessively hot. They are both used daily. If you need an intermediate size backup system, this is one you should have. They have never let me down.

Western Digital WDG2T15000N MyBook Premium II 1.5 TB Hard Drive

Review

This review covers the family of My Book Pro II/Premium II drives from Western Digital, since the primary differences between the 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0Tb dual-drive models involve the size of the drive pair only, as far as I can tell. I own the My Book Pro II 1.5Tb drive and have only configured it for the factory-default Raid 0 mode, since I wanted as much non-redundant storage as possible.

Anyone not familiar with external USB or Firewire drives may be surprised at the significantly slower data transfer; the USB or Firewire interface is the bottleneck, not the drive itself. For bulk storage at still-reasonable transfer rates and for the purchase price per byte, these large capacity drives can’t be beat – as long as they are reliable and the user observes all the rules about making sure the drives are safe to physically disconnect from the computer (I won’t cover the rules here; the operating system has its own Help section that can assist the user who is unsure of how to physically disconnect their drive without turning off the computer itself).

OK, back to the Western Digital My Book II drive… when the drive is received, the Raid Manager software package should be installed before plugging in the drive. After I did this and plugged in the drive, I had one problem after another with the drive disappearing in Windows, the fan going very loud when there was no heat issue to make it do so, then the drive would act like it over-heated and shut down. Twice I received replacement drives and both replacement drives acted the same way.

I figured the problem wasn’t the drive, so I tried the second replacement on a second PC running Vista; same problems. I next moved the drive to a PC running Windows XP; no problem – the drive ran quietly and reliably.

It turns out there is currently (12/22/07) a problem with Windows Vista and the way it stores driver information. The fix is found in their technical bulletin 1708 (go to www.wdc.com, support, frequently asked questions and enter “1708″ in the “Search by Keyword” field. This has solved all my problems with my drive and I can now recommend this drive without reservations, however Vista is due for its first significant “patch”, SP1, in the first half of 2008 and these sorts of patches have sometimes provoked new problems. I do think the solution presented in technical bulletin 1708 would still be helpful if the SP1 patch caused further problems, however.

Western Digital My Passport Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBAAA5000ASL-NESN (Cool Silver)

Review

I was excited to get my new hard drive, and I really wanted to get one that was portable (I already had an external hard drive, but it is a little big & heavy & needs to be plugged into a electrical socket). The order came quickly, and I was ready to get it up and running.

Upon opening, I knew that I needed to format this drive to my Mac computer (it was only formatted for PC). However, there was little instructions on how to do so. The hard drive does not come with a hard copy of the manual, and only has a “Quick Start” guide. To get the full manual you have to go online to the Western Digital website, then search aimlessly through a pdf file. The manual itself was not very helpful in explaining how to format the drive to a Mac. I was disappointed more that I could not figure out how to format the drive to be able to go between PC and Mac computers (since my fiance has a PC, and sometimes will pass stuff onto me). After a couple of days of my fiance & me looking through the manual, we eventually were able to format the hard drive for Mac only.

On another note. the USB cord for the hard drive I got did not stay in very well into the connection on the drive, which made the drive disconnect form the computer with the slightest motion. I had to find a new cord that actually stays in, but it works fine now.

Overall, the hard drive is excellent, and it is very nice to have an external hard drive I can easily carry around with me as needed.

Western Digital My Passport Essential 640 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBAAA6400ABK-NESN (Midnight Black)
